The function of a feeling is: to be felt. Emotions are our natural guidance system. They instantly provide information and motivation that may be vital to our survival.
Inevitably, usually at a very young age, we encounter an emotional experience that overwhelms our ability to feel it, and we shut down. This becomes a habit, and part of our life energy is sidelined.
Practicing meditation will inevitably begin to disturb some of this sidelined energy. The resulting experiences will challenge our ability to stay present. This is the whole point of meditation, but we need to understand how to work with it. We will spend a day familiarizing ourselves with several methods for doing this.
Bring a notebook. When you practice meditation, you are a scientist studying a fascinating, wild, and mysterious subject: your own mind. No scientist can conduct a proper study of even the simplest animal without some means of recording observations and questions. How much more important this is when that animal is yourself!
Potluck lunch. You will be asked to bring something for a shared, potluck lunch. It could be a single entree dish, a salad, a beverage, or a dessert. Let us know when you register if there is something in particular you feel moved to bring; otherwise we'll be in touch about what sort of thing we will need.
